Consumer society and the zombie apocalypse

When we wake up in the morning and put our feet on the ground, we better have a good reason for getting up. If we don't, it makes no difference whether we stay inside and go back to sleep.

This website is a wake up call. It is also a collection of texts, photos, videos in memory of the events that happened in such deceivingly unremarkable places as Overvecht and Barakaldo, where hundreds of zombies heeded that wake-up call and took to the streets to invade the shopping malls, joining a melancholic revolution without leaders, and sense of direction. Zombie Manifesto

The Zombie is kind of unglamorous, as far as characters from cinema go. Bereft of consciousness, personality and ambition, the zombie is more of a tragic antihero; a repulsive parody on the ideal citizen, with no other connection to lived experience than the automatic repetitions of old socialization routines. The figure of the Zombie drifting between life and death

Life and death are blended into one and the same thing in zombies. Yet they have been treated as a dichotomy in modern-day society, in which failure, sadness, loneliness, etc. are not permitted. We are forced to be heroes if we wish to avoid being cut off from others. The zombie as tragic hero could serve as a ‘perfect-imperfect’ model of the significance that life acquires once death, profound failure, anguish, infinite and fathomless despair have been experienced. "Shopping" at Impakt Event / De Zondagsschool

7 December, 2008 - 14:30

The Zondagsschool (Sunday school) is an intellectual variety show in which scientists, designers and artists deal with various themes from surprising perspectives. This Sunday it holds a sale and explores the mechanisms behind our purchasing habits. Do we have shopping genes? Has the mall become our natural habitat? This afternoon, there is a lot to learn from trend watcher Janus ter Visser. We delve into the architecture of shopping malls and psychologist Lies Klumper tells about her treatment of consumer addicts. Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum present their project "Stay inside. Close windows and doors.", in which zombies play a special role. The presentations are alternated with films by Yael Bartana, Chris Oakley and The Church of Stop Shopping.
